The formula

Sq ft = (Tons × 2,000 ÷ Density) ÷ (Thickness in ÷ 12)

Cubic feet = Tons × 2,000 ÷ Density (lb/ft³)

Substitution: at 145 lb/ft³, 1 ton × 2,000 = 2,000 lb; 2,000 ÷ 145 = 13.79 cu ft; thickness 2 in ÷ 12 = 0.1667 ft; 13.79 ÷ 0.1667 = 82.8 sq ft. The 2,000 is exact (pounds per short ton); density and thickness are the two inputs that decide how far the load spreads.

  • Coverage always needs a thickness. A tonnage with no depth gives no meaningful area — enter the compacted design thickness every time.
  • Remember the inverse relationship. Thicker means less area: the coverage figure drops as fast as the depth rises.
  • Use compacted thickness. Base the calculation on the finished in-place depth, not the loose lift behind the paver.
  • Leave a margin. Real edges, transitions and compaction eat into theoretical coverage, so don't plan a job to the last square foot.
