How this calculator works
The tool treats the paved area as a flat rectangular slab. It multiplies length by width by thickness to get a raw volume, adds your waste percentage, and converts the result into ordering units — cubic yards in US mode (dividing cubic feet by 27) or cubic meters in metric mode. Enter an optional density and it also returns an estimated weight.
Volume is the middle step between area and tonnage. Measure the area first with the asphalt area calculator, then, once you have cubic yards, convert to order weight with the asphalt tonnage calculator.
The formula
Volume (cu ft) = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Thickness (ft)
Volume (cu yd) = Volume (cu ft) ÷ 27
With waste: Volume × (1 + Waste %) Weight = Volume (cu ft) × Density (lb/ft³)
Example: 50 ft × 10 ft × (2 in ÷ 12) = 83.33 cu ft; ÷ 27 = 3.09 cu yd. One cubic yard is exactly 27 cubic feet (3 × 3 × 3), and about 0.765 cubic meters.
Worked examples
Example 1 — a 50 ft × 10 ft driveway, 2 inch overlay, 7% waste
- Area:
- 50 ft × 10 ft = 500 sq ft

- Convert thickness: 2 in ÷ 12 = 0.167 ft
- Raw volume: 500 sq ft × 0.167 ft = 83.33 cu ft
- Add 7% waste: 83.33 × 1.07 = 89.16 cu ft
- Convert to cubic yards: 89.16 ÷ 27 = 3.30 cu yd
Volume to order: 3.30 cubic yards
Suppliers usually deliver by weight, so convert this to tons — 3.30 cu yd × 1.96 ≈ 6.5 tons — before placing the order.
Example 2 — turning 10 cubic yards into tons
- Volume:

- Weight in pounds: 270 cu ft × 145 lb/ft³ = 39,150 lb

Tips and common pitfalls
- Divide by 27, not by 9. Twenty-seven converts cubic feet to cubic yards; nine converts square feet to square yards. Mixing them up is a frequent slip.
- Keep thickness in feet. A 2 inch layer is 0.167 ft, not 2 — enter inches only where the calculator asks for inches.
- Volume is not the order. Suppliers deliver tons; convert before buying so you are not guessing at the truck.
- Add waste to volume, then convert. Applying the 5–10% buffer to the raw volume keeps it consistent whether you order by cubic yard or by ton.

Waste accounts for compaction loss, uneven subgrade and material lost at edges and joints. A 5–10% safety factor is standard: larger, simple rectangles need less, small jobs with many edges need more. It is a planning allowance, not a guaranteed figure.
How do I convert asphalt volume to weight in tons?+
Multiply the volume in cubic feet by the density, then divide by 2,000. At 145 lb/ft³, one cubic yard (27 cubic feet) weighs about 3,915 pounds, or roughly 1.96 US tons — so multiply cubic yards by about 1.96 to estimate tons.
