How this calculator works

Square footage on its own does not fix a tonnage — a thin overlay and a full-depth lot can share the same footprint and need very different amounts of asphalt. The tool takes three inputs — area in square feet, compacted thickness in inches, and mix density — and returns the weight to order in US short tons. The formula

Tons = Sq ft × (Thickness in ÷ 12) × Density (lb/ft³) ÷ 2,000

Cubic feet = Sq ft × (Thickness in ÷ 12)

Substitution: at 145 lb/ft³, 1,000 sq ft × (2 ÷ 12) = 166.7 cu ft; 166.7 × 145 = 24,167 lb; 24,167 ÷ 2,000 = 12.08 tons. Dividing the thickness by 12 converts inches to feet so it multiplies cleanly against area in square feet — skip it and the result is twelvefold too large.
