How this calculator works
Contractors price small repairs by the patch area, so the tool multiplies the repair's length by its width and applies a per-square-foot rate. Because a repair is labor-heavy for its size, that rate is higher than a full-paving rate โ it bakes in the saw-cutting, tear-out, hauling and hand-work that a patch needs regardless of how small it is.
Add a mobilization fee on top for any professional visit; on a single pothole that fixed cost often outweighs the area cost. To estimate the patch material itself, use the asphalt patch calculator, and if damage is widespread rather than localized, compare against the asphalt resurfacing cost calculator.
The formula
Repair Cost = Repair Area (sq ft) ร Cost per sq ft
Total = Repair Cost + Mobilization fee
Example: a 100 sq ft patch at $12 / sq ft is $1,200 in area cost, before a $500โ$1,500 mobilization fee. The higher per-foot rate reflects hand-applied hot mix โ priced by the ton at about 145 lb/ftยณ per the Asphalt Institute โ plus the cut-and-remove labor a patch demands.
Worked examples
Example 1 โ a 100 sq ft patch at $12 / sq ft
- Damaged area:
- 10 ft ร 10 ft = 100 sq ft
- Repair rate:
- $12 / sq ft
- Mobilization:
- $800 (typical)
- Area cost: 100 ร $12 = $1,200
- Add mobilization: $1,200 + $800 = $2,000
Estimated total: โ $2,000
On this size the mobilization fee is a meaningful share of the bill โ batching repairs into one visit spreads it further.
Example 2 โ a single 3 ft ร 3 ft pothole
- Damaged area:
- 3 ft ร 3 ft = 9 sq ft
- Repair rate:
- $15 / sq ft
- Mobilization:
- $600 (typical)
- Area cost: 9 ร $15 = $135
- Add mobilization: $135 + $600 = $735
Estimated total: โ $735
A lone pothole is dominated by the fixed fee, so a contractor may simply quote a flat minimum charge instead.
Reference data
| Work type | Typical installed cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| New driveway (install) | $7โ$15 / sq ft | Includes base prep and compaction |
| Large paving / parking lot | $4โ$12 / sq ft | Lower per-foot on big areas |
| Resurfacing / overlay (1.5โ2 in) | $3โ$7 / sq ft | Reuses the existing pavement as a base |
| Localized repair / patching | $10โ$20+ / sq ft | Plus a $500โ$1,500 mobilization fee |
| Milling / removal | $0.30โ$0.80 / sq ft | Plus hauling and disposal of grindings |
| Full removal & replacement | $7โ$15 / sq ft | Dig-out of old pavement plus new install |
Key facts
- Localized asphalt repair typically costs $10โ$20+ per square foot in the US as of 2026 โ more per foot than full paving.
- Most paving companies add a mobilization fee of about $500โ$1,500 to any repair, regardless of patch size.
- A repair costs more per square foot than paving because saw-cutting, tear-out and hand-applied mix do not scale down with area.
- Batching several repairs into a single site visit spreads the mobilization fee and lowers the cost per patch.
Who should use this and when
This is for budgeting a bounded fix โ a homeowner with a cracked section, a property manager scoping a few potholes before winter. It answers what a patch job should roughly cost so a quote does not blindside you. If the pavement is failing across the board, repairing patch after patch is false economy: price a full overlay with the asphalt resurfacing cost calculator or a rebuild with the asphalt driveway cost calculator instead.
Tips and common pitfalls
- Batch your repairs. One visit for several patches spreads the mobilization fee and can halve the effective cost per hole.
- Ask for the minimum charge. Below a certain area, contractors bill a flat minimum rather than a per-foot rate โ know it before you compare quotes.
- Fix the cause, not just the symptom. A pothole over a drainage problem will return; a lasting repair addresses why the asphalt failed.
- Weigh repair against resurfacing. Past a handful of patches, an overlay is usually cheaper and lasts longer than repeated spot repairs.
Repair FAQs
How much does it cost to repair a section of asphalt?+
Localized asphalt repair typically runs $10 to $20+ per square foot in the US as of 2026 โ more per foot than full paving because of saw-cutting and hand work โ plus a mobilization fee. A 100 sq ft patch is roughly $1,000 to $2,000 before that fee.
How much does pothole repair cost?+
A single pothole is small in area but carries the same fixed costs as a bigger repair, so it is usually billed at a minimum charge rather than by the square foot. Expect the mobilization fee to dominate a one-pothole job; batching several repairs into one visit is far cheaper per hole.
Why does a small repair cost more per square foot than paving?+
Repairs are labor-heavy relative to their size: saw-cutting clean edges, removing old asphalt, hauling debris and hand-applying new mix. Those steps do not shrink much for a small patch, so the per-square-foot rate is higher than for a large, machine-paved surface.
Is there a minimum charge for asphalt repairs?+
Almost always. Most paving companies apply a mobilization fee โ commonly $500 to $1,500 โ to cover bringing trucks, a crew and hot mix to your site, regardless of how small the patch is. It is why combining repairs into one visit saves money.
Repair or resurface โ which should I choose?+
Repair fixes localized damage: a pothole, a cracked section, a utility cut. Resurfacing is better when the whole surface is worn but the base is still sound. If damage is spreading across the pavement, an overlay is usually more economical than repairing patch after patch.
How soon can I drive on a repaired area?+
A hot-mix patch can usually take traffic within a few hours once it has cooled, though you should avoid turning your wheels while stationary on a fresh patch for about 24 hours. Cold-patch DIY repairs can be driven on almost immediately but keep compacting under traffic.

Estimates & assumptions
- Cost figures are planning estimates for the US as of 2026, expressed as ranges. They are compiled from common contractor pricing, not an authoritative price index.
- Repair rates are higher per square foot than paving rates and vary widely with access, depth of damage and how much saw-cutting is needed.
- The estimate is repair area ร your rate; add a mobilization fee separately, and note contractors often apply a flat minimum charge on tiny jobs.
- This tool does not provide a quote or assess whether a repair or a full replacement is the right choice.
