How this calculator works

Ordering asphalt is done by the ton, but you measure a project in square feet, so this tool bridges the two. It takes a total surfaced area, a compacted depth and a mix density, converts them to a volume, and returns the weight in both pounds and US tons. Because it works from a single area figure, you skip breaking the job into shapes — pave a walkway, a court or a driveway with the same three inputs.

The formula

Tons = Area (sq ft) × (Depth in ÷ 12) × 145 lb/ft³ ÷ 2,000

With waste: Tons × (1 + Waste %)

Example: 1,000 sq ft × (2 in ÷ 12) × 145 ÷ 2,000 = 12.08 tons. The depth is divided by 12 to turn inches into feet, 145 lb/ft³ is the standard hot-mix density, and 2,000 is the number of pounds in one US short ton.

  • Enter compacted depth, not the loose lift. Fresh mix "fluffs" and is rolled down; order against the finished, compacted thickness the spec calls for.
  • Add waste before you order, not after. A 5–10% allowance covers compaction and edges, and rounding up to the supplier's minimum load avoids a second delivery for a few missing tons.

  • The aggregate base is a separate order. This tool sizes the asphalt surface only, not the crushed-stone base beneath it.
