How this calculator works
You enter two things: how many of the 60 multiple-choice questions you answered correctly, and how many raw points you earned on each of the seven free-response questions. It scales each section to 50 points, adds them into a composite out of 100, and maps that onto a 1โ5 band. The weighted breakdown panel is usually more useful than the predicted number: it shows where your next point is cheapest.
How the AP Chemistry exam is scored
The exam runs 3 hours 15 minutes across two sections that count equally.

The formula
MCQ weighted = (MCQ correct รท 60) ร 50
FRQ weighted = (FRQ points รท 46) ร 50
Composite = MCQ weighted + FRQ weighted (0โ100)
Each section is normalised to 50 points regardless of how many raw points it contains, then the composite is rounded before the band lookup. What this model cannot reproduce is the College Board's own conversion from composite to 1โ5, which is not published.

- Value of 1 FRQ point: 50 รท 46 = 1.09 composite points

Arithmetic from the published section weights, not a claim about how the exam is graded โ but the most useful thing the model tells you. With limited revision time, free-response partial credit is the higher-leverage target.

We publish the bands rather than hiding them, because a score predictor that will not show its own model is not much use. But read them for what they are. Use them to see roughly where you sit โ not to conclude that 73 is a 4 and 74 is a 5.

Tips and common pitfalls
- Enter raw points, not percentages. The most common input error is typing 70 into the multiple-choice field meaning "70%". That field wants a count out of 60.
- Mark free-response answers against the official guidelines. Marking generously produces a flattering, useless prediction.
- Never leave a multiple-choice question blank. There is no penalty for a wrong answer, so a blank is a guaranteed zero where a guess is not.
- Treat a result near a band edge as unresolved. A composite of 73 and one of 74 are not different performances.

The sections are worth the same overall, but the individual points are not. Section I spreads 50 weighted points across 60 questions, so one correct answer is worth about 0.83 composite points; Section II spreads 50 across 46 raw points, so one free-response point is worth about 1.09 โ roughly 1.3 times as much.
Is a 3 on AP Chemistry good enough for college credit?+
Often, but it depends on the institution. The College Board notes that many US colleges grant credit or advanced placement for scores of 3 and above. Policies vary by college and by department, so check the schools you are applying to.
Why might my predicted score differ from my real AP Chemistry score?+
Because the real conversion is set after the exam. The College Board scales each year's composite scores so a 3 means the same thing across years, which shifts the boundaries with the difficulty of that year's questions. A fixed set of bands cannot anticipate that.
